STOCKTON, Calif. — With the triple-digit heat in the forecast, high school sports across California are using new rules to keep the athletes safe.
The California Interscholastic Federation, the governing body for high school sports, mandated new rules for athletes playing and practicing in extreme heat this year.
The rules require them to use a wet bulb globe thermometer to measure heat stress in direct sunlight.
"We prioritize student safety and want to ensure that our student-athletes get to stay on their practice schedules and be ready for all their big games. And so we're always looking for ways to make sure that they're staying cool, they're staying hydrated while maintaining a kind of balance to their schedules," said Tyler Heberle, the spokesperson for Lincoln Unified School District in Stockton.
