SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CITC) — California's highest-ranking education official won't say he regrets how long the state relied on remote learning during the pandemic, despite less than half of students statewide currently reading and performing math at grade level.

California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond appeared on FOX 11 Los Angeles's "The Issue Is" Friday. Thurmond, who has announced that he is "seriously exploring" a gubernatorial run, discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on California's public schools.

"Knowing what we know now, did we keep schools in California closed for too long?" anchor Elex Michaelson asked Thurmond.
