Children often struggle to memorize multiplication facts, as Hechinger reported, but research suggests it may be worth the effort.

Cognitive scientists say that learning your times tables by heart eases the load on your brain’s working memory, which experts say is limited, by moving the facts into long-term memory. Lightening that cognitive load means you can focus all your mental power on problem-solving.
