SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CITC) — Parents and advocates in California are pushing to make "high-quality education" a constitutional right for students statewide, arguing that the state's public schools have failed to provide that in recent years.
A campaign for "The Constitutional Right to a High-Quality Public Education Act" was launched in 2021 by KidsFirst, prompted in part by pandemic-related school closures in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Proponents are looking for an amendment to be added to the Constitution of California, mandating that all students be provided with "the skills necessary to fully participate in the economy, our democracy and our society."
Angela Morabito, a spokesperson for the Defense of Freedom Institute (DFI) and former press secretary for the U.S. Department of Education, believes this is a sign that California parents feel "helpless."
